Over 300 different native languages are spoken in Indonesia.
✓ Singapore is a real cultural melting pot with lots of visitors and residents looking to exchange different currencies all the time. Certain areas of town (The Arcade at Raffles Place, Lucky Plaza, Mustafa Centre, People's Park Complex, and Parkway Parade to name a few) are better for changing specific currencies. The moment you land, you’ll find several money changers at the international arrivals of Ngurah Rai Airport offering fairly competitive rates. They are open around the clock, but you may find better rates outside the airport. You can then either change your money at your hotel (usually at not very competitive rates), or head out to any of these authorised and recommended money changers in Bali, some of which have branches spread throughout Bali’s popular resort areas.
✓ To purchase a SIM card in Singapore, head over to the Changi Meet & Greet at Changi Airport Terminals 1, 2, 3 & 4 Arrival Halls, Changi Recommends at Changi Airport Terminal 4 Arrival Hall, any M1 Shop or selected retailers islandwide, like the selected 7-Eleven and Cheers convenience stores around Singapore.Upon landing at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, numerous kiosks sell SIM cards. ✓ Tipping in Singapore is not expected. Instead, a service charge will normally be added to your bill. The service charge will usually be declared on the menu if you're in a cafe or restaurant, for example, and is paid directly to the company rather than to an individual member of staff.Tipping is not mandatory in Indonesia. However, if you want to tip, perhaps provide 5-10% of the total bill. Restaurants: some restaurants will include 5-10% service charge to their bill. But if they don't levy any service charge, you can tip between Rp10,000 to 10% of the total bill.
✓ Indeed, in 2022 the Global Peace Index (GPI) ranked Singapore *the* safest and most peaceful country in Asia, and ninth overall globally, beaten only by famously peace-loving destinations like Iceland, Denmark and New Zealand.Overall, Indonesia can be considered a safe travel destination. However, there are precautions that any traveler should take, and having the right knowledge is essential for staying safe throughout their trip.
✓ You can drink tap water in Singapore. In fact, according to official sources, on the Asian continent, Singapore is one of the few countries where the tap water is safe for drinking, alongside Hong Kong, Brunei, Israel, South Korea, and Japan. Tap water in Indonesia isn't drinkable. You should always opt for bottled, filtered or boiled water, rather than drinking straight from the tap. You should also avoid brushing your teeth with tap water throughout the country.
✓ All around the city in Singapore, there are designated smoking spots within offices, food courts, educational institutions, and other open spaces, where one can stop and smoke. Even at places where smoking is prohibited, there may be certain exceptions, all in the interest of the larger public. In Indonesia, smoking is prohibited in public places, such as Healthcare Facilities, Educational Facilities, and Places of Worship. Smoking is also prohibited in Public Transport. Children's Outdoor or Indoor Facilities are also a smoke-free zone.
✓ Drinking in public is legal in Singapore; however, consumption of alcohol in a public space or non-licensed premise is restricted from 10.30pm to 7am after the 2013 Little India riot. Indonesia as a country with Muslims as the majority, alcohol drinking is prohibited by the laws of the religion and frowned upon. However, since Indonesia is a country with diverse cultures and religions, currently there are no alcohol bans being enforced in Indonesia, with the exception of Aceh.
✓ Generally, Singapore is pretty cashless - most retailers and restaurants, and even many small food stores at hawker centers, will take a card payment. There are also ATMs everywhere if you decide you really need cash - making spending with a travel card a smart option for many people.Although it is practical to carry credit or debit cards around for your traveling pleasure, when traveling to remote areas and visiting local or traditional markets in Indonesia, it is highly wise and preferable to have some small change at hand for purchasing purposes.
✓ There is an unwritten etiquette in Singapore, so if you wear something too revealing, you will attract attention. While there isn't a Singapore dress code as such, clean, tidy, casual, fun, classic and when required, conservative is the way to dress as a tourist. In the tourist areas of Indonesia, you can you dress as you like without risk of offending the locals. However, be careful of what you wear in more remote regions. Women should opt for trousers or a long skirt and cover their shoulders. Men should leave their tank tops at home.
✓ Singapore is regarded as a Fine City. It has severe rules that must be followed by both tourists and locals. Those who do not comply will face harsh sanctions and heavy penalties.
✓ Be well versed with the laws of Singapore, which can often be bizarre, for instance, singing songs with obscene lyrics could attract a hefty fine.
✓ Chewing gum is illegal in Singapore. Probably the most well-known of the laws is Singapore’s chewing gum law. Chewing gum in Singapore is completely forbidden. This also includes the sale of chewing gum, importing or bringing chewing gum into Singapore and spitting it out is the worst crime of all.
✓ No group gatherings, loud family dinners or crazy parties after 10pm in Singapore, it is actually considered illegal. If the police are called and you don’t have a ‘reasonable excuse’ for your noise you could be issued a fine.
✓ Officials actually conduct random checks in public toilets to make sure people flush after they go. You could actually be looking at a fine if you fail to do so, so make sure you double check before you leave your cubical.
✓ If you connect to someone’s unsecured wifi in Singapore it’s considered hacking and can result in serious punishments.
✓ Definitely the worst of all Singapore laws, male homosexuality is illegal and includes everything from having sex with a member of the same gender, to holding hands and kissing or hugging in public. Surprisingly, the wording of the laws only specifies male homosexuality, so I’m not sure what that means for females? There is a movement building though, with people who are actively trying to have this law overturned, but for now unfortunately it is still in place.
✓ Singapore seems to take not irritating others in public places very seriously, with both fines or imprisonment the punishment for either singing lyrics (specifically, if they contain swear words), or playing a musical instrument in a way that’s likely to cause annoyance to another person.
✓ There’s definitely no street art lane way scene in Singapore, graffiti vandalism can get you arrested or even caned! An old school punishment, but definitely one that is still being threatened in modern Singapore today, with reports of caning being threatened to a group of American tourists as recently as 2014.
✓ Bird lovers be careful, you might not think twice before sharing your lunch crumbs with the local pigeons but if you’re caught in Singapore, it will definitely cost you.
✓ Not uncommon in many countries around the world, and certainly not crazy by any means, but if you’re caught trafficking or in the possession of drugs during your time in Singapore penalties range from fines up to S$20,000 to 10 years in prison, and in very extreme cases even the death penalty. The unique part of this law to point out though, is that Singapore officials have the right to conduct anonymous and random drug tests to anyone without a warrant and if you’re caught with drugs in your system, you can also be looking at penalties. This also means that any drugs taken before you enter Singapore that could still be in your system will put you at risk.
✓ Some restaurants and clubs may require more formal dress (no flip flops, shorts or sleeveless tops) in Singapore, so consider packing a smarter outfit and shoes just in case.
✓ Look after your mobile phone with a phone bunjee – it protects against loss, theft and damage.
✓ Avoid paying unexpected baggage fees – use an accurate luggage scale to ensure you keep within the weight allowance. Don't forget to leave room for souvenirs on the way home! Bottles of Singapore Sling cocktail are popular, but remember any liquids must go in your checked-in luggage. Merlion is the national mascot of Singapore, and you'll see countless products to buy featuring this icon.
✓ Another thing Bali isn’t short of is its collection of majestic nature scenes—from the marvelous rice terraces and paddies to gorgeous waterfalls and deep river gorges in Central Bali.
✓ The Island of the Gods offers more than just nature. It also has a wide array of food options, such as local Balinese and Indonesian treats and its up-and-coming coffee culture.Try the babiguling, nasi goreng, and beef rendang to get to know Indonesia one flavor at a time.
✓ There are mosquito-borne illnesses in Bali, particularly Dengue Fever makes its way through the tourist population a lot.To avoid Dengue, always keep your bug spray on you.If you’re near areas of water like rice paddies (which are everywhere in Bali), or out at night the mosquitos are more aggressive.
✓ Do not approach stray animals. Rabies is a very real problem in Indonesia and a lot of tourists have their trip cut short by being bitten by some animal or another.
